چکیده

Tuberculosis (TB) and human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/ AIDS) constitute the main burden of infectious disease in resource-limited countries. Estimates by the World Health Orgnisation (WHO) indicate that there are more than nine million new active cases of TB and close to two million deaths per year and 2.6 million new cases of HIV infection and 1.8 million AIDS related deaths occur per year. Myocobacterium tuberculosisHIV co-infection poses particular diagnostic and therapeutic challenges and exert immense pressure on health care systems in African countries with large populations of co-infected individuals. In the individual host the two pathogens, M. tuberculosis and HIV potentiate one another, accelerating the deterioration of immunological functions and resulting in premature death if untreated. TB is the largest single cause of death in the setting of AIDS, accounting for about 26% of AIDSrelated deaths, 99% of which occur in developing countries. Both TB and HIV have profound effects on the immune system, as they are capable of disarming the host's immune responses through mechanism that are not fully understood. HIV co-infection is the most powerful known risk factor of latent TB reactivation 20-fold. Likewise, TB has been reported to exacerbate HIV infection. Various lines of evidence indicate that inborn errors of immunity, as well as genetic polymorphisms, have an impact on susceptibility to TB and HIV.

Thoracic CT Scan Findings in Patients with HIV/TB co-infection before and after treatment

Background and Aim: Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) infection is common in patients infected with the Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). In this study, we evaluated thoracic CT scan findings of HIV/TB co-infection, before and after anti-TB treatment. Materials and Methods: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, pre-and post-treatment thoracic CT scans of patients diagnosed with HIV and defin...

prevalence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in patients infected with HIV by microscopical and molecular methods

Background:In some countries, one of the first and most common manifestations of HIV positive patients is tuberculosis (TB). HIV positive people are prone to other infections such as tuberculosis due to immune deficiency and reduced CD4+ cell count. Although increasing access to antiretroviral therapy has led to a reduction in HIV-related opportunistic infections and mortality, the simultaneous...

Evaluation of clinical course and laboratory findings in HIV/HTLV-1 co-infection compare with HIV mono infection

Background: In the last 10 years, co-infection of human immunodeficiency virus/human T-cell leukemia virus-1 (HIV/HTLV-1) has emerged as a worldwide health problem. These viruses has the same route to infect human but different effects on CD4 positive T-cells. There was controversial results about the influence of co-infection HIV/HTLV-1 pathogenesis. This study compared clinical course and lab...

TB/HIV Co-Infection Care in Conflict-Affected Settings: A Mapping of Health Facilities in the Goma Area, Democratic Republic of Congo

Background HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis (TB) are major contributors to the burden of disease in sub-Saharan Africa. The two diseases have been described as a harmful synergy as they are biologically and epidemiologically linked. Control of TB/HIV co-infection is an integral and most challenging part of both national TB and national HIV control programmes, especially in contexts of instability wher...

Predictors of tuberculosis and human immunodeficiency virus co-infection: a case-control study

OBJECTIVES The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and Mycobacterium tuberculosis co-infection is a major global challenge. It is not clear why some HIV-positive people are co-infected with tuberculosis (TB) while others are not. This study addressed that question. METHODS This case-control study was conducted in Tehran, Iran in June 2004, enrolling 2,388 HIV-positive people. Cases were select...
